{"id":133,"date":"2015-05-08T07:08:25","date_gmt":"2015-05-08T14:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/?p=133"},"modified":"2015-08-13T07:22:15","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T14:22:15","slug":"linux-and-audio-ugh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/?p=133","title":{"rendered":"Linux and audio&#8211;ugh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years I&#8217;ve made a number of attempts to replace my day to day Windows use with the Linux distro of the week.\u00a0 And those attempts have always ended in tears.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the simple things.\u00a0 Things you just <em>expect<\/em> to work.\u00a0 Like your video.\u00a0 Or your audio.\u00a0 It seems to me that in the eyes of Linux you&#8217;re an entitled princess to expect both.<\/p>\n<p>Back when Red Hat was the new &#8220;Windows-killer&#8221; I took the plunge and installed it.\u00a0 I spent a <em>week<\/em> trying to get audio out of a Sound Blaster\u2122 card&#8211;at that time the most common bog-standard audio card in existence.\u00a0 My <em>literally a genius<\/em> room-mate of the time was stumped as well.\u00a0 It simply didn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>That was my first experience with Linux, and subsequently not a fond memory.<\/p>\n<p>Now 20 years later I&#8217;m trying to coax audio out of a Raspberry Pi 2 and not making much headway.\u00a0 I&#8217;m running Rasbian, and following 20 guides on how to get ALSA or PulseAudio to play nice has gotten me pretty much <em>nowhere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>All I want this box to do&#8211;<em>literally<\/em> the only thing I&#8217;m going to ask of it is that it act as a Mumble client and play Mumble&#8217;s audio out of the 3.5mm jack.<\/p>\n<p>Is that a lot to ask?<\/p>\n<p>edit: so it appears Mumble isn&#8217;t compiled with ARM processors in mind, and I am not alone in not being able to get it to work.\u00a0 Huh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years I&#8217;ve made a number of attempts to replace my day to day Windows use with the Linux distro of the week.\u00a0 And those attempts have always ended in tears.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/133"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=133"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/133\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":144,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/133\/revisions\/144"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=133"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=133"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/wiki.lillerant.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=133"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
